The worldwide Augustana College experience

Hey! My name is Kim Coakley. I will be a junior this year at Augustana College. This will be quite an exciting year because I’m spending my fall term in Asia travelling around Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, and then to Hawaii! On campus I get involved in music. I am in the Cantilena choir, and I also take voice lessons. I am a psychology major, so I also spend quite a bit of time in the psychology building.

Mainland China

So we’ve been in Mainland China since October 7.  We took the train across the border which was cool to see the actual crossing of the border, but it wasn’t as impressive as I had thought it would be.  We knew it was going to be a river and have a barbed wire fence, but […]

Hong Kong

Hong Kong has been fun and some more of the same that we experienced in Taiwan.  We’ve been to the jade market and ladies market.  The ladies market is basically a street market with so many vendors it is crazy.  The jade market in Hong Kong is smaller than the one in Taipei, however, the […]

Taipei, Taiwan

We arrived to Taipei a week ago.  It has been quite a time too.  At first I didn’t think I would enjoy it as much as I liked Japan, and I’m not sure I do, however, I like it a lot more than I did the first day we were out and about.  It was […]

We’ve been in the worlds largest city for about 9 days now.  Tokyo is such an overwhelming place there is so much to do and with classes and homework it just does not seem like there is enough time to see everything.  I’ve mostly seen Shibuya and I have also been to Shinjuku a couple […]

Arriving in Matsuyama was a bit more of a culture shock because there is very little English anywhere in the city.  However, it has some interesting aspects.  The first restaurant we went to was unique.  We ordered our meals out of a vending machine type thing and handed the receipt to the cook and they […]

We made a quick stop in Hiroshima after Kyoto.  While Kyoto is my favorite city so far because of it’s beauty and just the feel of the city while walking around, I also really love Hiroshima.  I like the river that is near the park it is relaxing to sit and watch it.  I also […]

Currently we are in Kyoto right now, we have been here since Wednesday night and have done so many exciting things.  Kyoto is a beautiful place to walk around in.  Everywhere you go you see mountains surrounding you.  For our first lunch in Kyoto we found a restaurant that was more of a traditional Japanese […]

The Last of Osaka

Well we’ve been in Osaka for about four days now and we’re leaving for Kyoto tomorrow morning.  Osaka has been a great way to start the trip.  It has been quite easy to travel on the subway to see what all is around the city.  Yesterday we went to the Osaka Garden Club and attended […]

After a long day of traveling we arrived in Osaka, Japan Friday night.  It was quite an interesting experience coming to a youth hostel.  In the youth hostel we have most of our meals in the cafeteria where we also have class.  We share a room with four or five other students.  Most students have […]

Goodbye Familiar, Hello New…

Thursday morning a group of nearly 80 students including myself will be leaving for Asia.  We will be starting in Japan and traveling to Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China.  We will end our trip in Hawaii.  I am looking forward to all the fun times and new and exciting things we will be learning.  I […]
