A window inside life at Augustana College

Thinking about the Future

Hello everyone!

This week has been full of talk about vocation so I thought I would let you in on what I want for my future. I came to Augustana with the full intention of double majoring in Business and Music with a minor in Spanish. I knew what I wanted to do in life and that is to work for a major league baseball organization. I was set with a Business major but why did I have music thrown into the mix. I didn’t want to do anything with music. After taking Musicianship 111 I quickly realized that I was in way over my head. Music was not what I really wanted for my life. I love music and I am talented but I am passionate about baseball.

My ideas about what I want have changed about a thousand times since I was five. I have gone from wanting to be an artist who lives in New Jersey, to a vet, an author, a paramedic, the conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and even to the President of the United States. I have never kept an idea about my future for more than a year until I found out what I really wanted to do. I was in my Sophomore year of high school that I decided I wanted to work for a baseball organization. More specifically, I want to be the General Manager of the Chicago Cubs. I am a die-hard Cubs fan. I will get into arguments about why the Cubs are so great and can always defend my point-of-view. It was my sophomore year that I really noticed and brought to attention my love for baseball. I even put the Chicago Cubs website as my homepage. It was then that I started to memorize stats and learn the different types of pitches. I knew the line-up, who the probable pitchers were and how many home runs Alfonso Soriano had for the season. I fell in love. I am surrounded by my love of baseball. i love the workings of it and the complete unpredictability of the game. I love that you never know what is going to happen the next second. It is a game of chance and skill.

Baseball is the reason I am at Augustana. I am here to work towards my dream becoming a reality This is the best place for me in terms of helping me with internships and getting my name out there. Many people have told me that my dream may not come true, but that makes me want to work even harder to prove to everyone that I can make it, I will do this. For me, my biggest critic is myself, so I feel as though if I fail I am letting myself down because I am not living up to the expectation I have for myself. I need to succeed for me and I believe I am in the perfect place to start on my journey to Wrigley Field.

If I have learned anything from the past four weeks it is to never give up on your dreams. If you believe you want to be the President of the United States do not let anyone tell you that you will never make it. If you want to win a Grammy, practice until you can sing no more. Never believe that you cannot do something. If you settle for mediocrity you are proving to every person out there that was telling you that you won’t make it that they were right. Fight for your dreams because if you don’t then you will never win. I am never going to give up my dream of becoming the general manager because if I do, I am giving up on myself.

Singing off,

♥ Hannah
