Summer Memories / Future Dreams

Dreams by Langston Hughes

Hold fast to dreams

For if dreams die

Life is a broken winged bird

That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams

For when dreams go

Life is a breen field

Frozen with snow.

I have been home for almost two months but, i had already made memories I will never forget. I spent a weekend in Holland,MI visiting my best friend. I survived a power outage downtown and a nasty storm. I traveled to the NEW Leadership Summer Institute at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I saw old friends and made new ones. During the July 4th weekend, I visited my roommates at the Taste of Chicago and stayed at one of their houses. I was in a car accident. I returned to my job at the law office. I even spent a day at Six Flags.

I have been thinking a lot about who I am and where I want to go. I have been evaluating the dreams that I have. I just left the hospital where I visited my Uncle Hack, he is very sick.  Seeing him like that was very diffucult, but I always remember how he told me to follow my dreams. He was always telling me to study hard in school and find a career I love. I hope to make him proud. I find the poem above to be very powerful.

If you happen to follow my blog, you would know that I have been beyond excited for my leadership institute. It did not disappoint. I visited City Hall, Jane Addams Hull House, the Thompson Center and the Sears Tower. I met many important figures in state politics including many women legislators in the House and Senate, a Illinois Supreme Court Justice, a  Former Governor, a Former Lt. Governor, attorneys, academics, lobbyists and much more. I had the honor to introduce Carol Marin at the Union League club. I made great friends and learned a lot about my self.

People who know me well understand that my future plans change a lot because I get so excited and enthusiastic about everything I do. Here is my current plan/dream: Finish college with good grades and great memories. Take a year off to volunteer. I am researching the Americorps or other non-profit work especially with women and children. Then, start law school. There, I also want to work for the public. I have been researching clinics to represent domestic violence victims, children and elderly. How amazing! I will have to see where I end up. Right now, I am just so lucky for everything that I have. More updates to come 🙂
