A window inside life at Augustana College

Number One

Who doesn’t like to finish first? Or be the favorite in a crowd? Or have, what seems to be like… everything? Everyone of us have some-type of individual that we admire, maybe so much that it causes us to become jealous. This among many other things, will be one of the experiences you will face in college. Maybe a friend scores higher on a test than you, or edges you out in a leadership position in work, or just seems to get all the girls or guys. The biggest thing to remember is that life is full of surprises, and with surprises comes change. Change is apart of life, it is everlasting and inevitable, so the only way for growth to occur is through change. Expect it.

While being “number one” may be rewarding and exciting, it is not everything. Some may disagree, but those that do disagree have not yet learned that losing is just as important as winning. One of my favorite athletes is Michael Jordan. During one of his commercials he said a quote that really stood out to me, dealing with winning and losing. He stated that:

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

While Jordan may have not come up with this saying by himself, it brings up a very visual metaphor that I continually remember. You will be faced with lots of challenges, as I’m sure you already have, at your time at Augie and more importantly, life. However, I firmly believe that experiences do not define your life, it is the way that you react and learn from those experiences that defines your life.

So the next time you are feeling a bit unfortunate or feeling like ‘number one,’ remember that either way it’s a win-win situation.
