Augie Hub has arrived! This new system allows the CEC to post internship, job, and volunteer opportunities for our students through a central portal web site. There are already over 200 postings for students to view.
Augie Hub was introduced to students on Monday October 3rd, and by Wednesday, 435 students had logged in to use it! Announcement of Faculty Grants and Request for Proposals
for Service-Learning and Vocational Reflection Course Development
Augustana's Service-Learning Office and Center for Vocational Reflection encourage and support members of the campus community in continually enriching the learning environment through meaningful reflection and service. We want to nurture commitment, understanding, and responsibility so that our graduates not only have successful careers, but also contribute to their communities and our society, and live life with intention, integrity and generosity in the context of the world around us.
Over the past decade through previous initiatives, Augustana faculty have successfully and creatively integrated vocation (i.e. how one's gifts, skills and talents intersect with the needs of the community) and service-learning into a variety of courses on campus. To build upon this work and momentum, we are now requesting proposals from faculty for further integration with two new course design grants - one for developing service-learning courses, and another for integrating vocational reflection. Both grants offer a $500 award ($250 distributed upon grant approval and $250 distributed upon the first day of the term the course is taught) for a faculty member's ongoing or to-be-developed course.
The Vocation Grant encourages students to relate their personal experiences, prior knowledge, and story, to both the course content as well as the student's self understanding and future direction. Funds might be used to identify or construct self-assessments, integrate autobiographical writing assignments, conduct interviews focused on journey, engage in minor service projects not eligible for the service-learning designation, and connecting ultimate meanings and the sacred into course discourse and writing.
The Service-Learning Grant provides an incentive for a faculty member to develop a proposal for a "Service-Learning Designated Course." Service-learning is "a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility and strengthen communities" (National Service-Learning Clearinghouse). The community served, whether local or afar, must establish the objective of the service project.
